Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?

Mildmay is very short, approximately five feet and a few inches (he's canonically six inches shorter than his brother, who is notably very tall, which means he has to be very short while still being only six inches shorter than Felix, so he's presumably around 5'6"). According to the author, Mildmay has the physique of this guy.

2. How old is he?

in his mid 20s. he's 21 at the start of melusine, and it's been around four years since then, give or take, so twenty five! three septads and three.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?

Mildmay doesn't slouch, but he is a rather hunched person, leaning on his cane and all.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?

Mildmay is in excellent physical health, aside from his limp leg.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?

Mildmay is canonically very graceful, even given his leg. Being trained as a cat burglar does that to a person, i guess. Felix at one point compares him to a panther.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?

He thinks he's hideous. Others have said he's very attractive. It's... what you're into, I guess.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?

Corpse-pale, he calls it. He has a nose that suggests it's been broken more than once, and a huge scar along the left side of his face, sooo...

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.

Fox-red, very light and thin. Soft. He keeps it back in a braid.

9. What color are his eyes?

'Poison green' as per Felix's narration.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?

Maybe that huge scar on his face? Goes from his temple to his chin, totally twisting up his mouth on one side.

11. What are his chief tension centers?

Shoulders.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?

Black, black, black. It's traditional. If he had a choice in the matter, he'd wear browns and whites, average stuff that'd let him blend in better. Think faintly 17th-18th century wear. I like to imagine he's fond of Victorian string ties, tho.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?

Mostly, yeah. Baggy or too-tight clothes would draw unnecessary attention to him.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?

More less. He doesn't really... have a job. Oops.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?

hmmmm.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?

Mildmay has a deep voice, with a faintly southern twang (think Tennessee), with the slur and drag his scar causes him.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?

Slowly, though he'll go faster if he's annoyed or angry. He has difficulty with 'S's ('assassin' is apparently a difficult word for him).

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?

Lower City accent, which sounds like a southern American accent. As such, any French words he pronounces will be pronounced by American pronunciation rules-- that's what's considered Correct in his language.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?

Marathine (Anglo-French with American pron.), Troian / Kekropian (Greek with more than a little vulgar Latin influence), Midlander (Italian), and Merrows (Russian). He's more-less fluent in all of them, but his real ear is for gutter slang.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?

Depending on who he's talking to, he can switch languages easily, but he basically refuses to change his accent or speak the more refined dialects of a language.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?

Mildmay is very quiet and speaks little even at the best of times. He likes to have time to think before he speaks, though he's clever enough to improvise when that isn't an option.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?

He can get flummoxed sometimes. He's inarticulate, but he has a knack for saying just what he needs in as few words as possible.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?

He's very smart, and it's definitely street-smart.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?

Both. He can certainly think on his feet, and he's plenty good at it, but he prefers deliberation time. Of course, that often means he'll have too much time to stew and psych himself out, sometimes. He has zero confidence in his mental prowess and if he thinks for too long he'll realize he's doing it and knock himself down a peg.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?

Extremely logical, intuitive and practical.

4. What kind of education has the character had?

None. Is none an option? Mildmay is largely self-taught, except for the things his Keeper taught him, like pick-pocketing and lock-picking. I dunno where he learned knife fighting from.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?

History! Maps! He'd like it if someone taught him to read, natch.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?

Super introverted. He's not shy, but he finds social exertion exhausting.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?

Mostly even-tempered, a little melancholy. He's fairly laid-back, except for things like Felix's wellfare or his own survival; on those issues, shit is he driven.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?

Suspicioussssssssss

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?

Mildmay is a pro reactor.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?

Well, he wishes it were flight...

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?

Dark as shit. Extremely morbid, very subtle.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?

He probably has clinical depression through most of The Mirador, so...

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?

That fucking scar.

14. What does he fear?

Felix's death.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?

Nothing specific. He just wants to be by Felix.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?

Uh, how about basically everything from his past?

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.

Lol, none. He doesn't know who his father was, and his mother is way dead. He does feel some lingering guilt and confusion toward her, but that's about the end of it.

As for his Keeper, well... as he says himself, he still doesn't know if he loves her or hates her, but he sure as fuck hates the way she tried to run him.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?

Lol Felix. Can we say 'complicated'?

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?

Nopers.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?

Nope. Mildmay is very singular about who he considers his family.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?

Cardenio Richey, who we never learn how they met. Mildmay has very few people he ever refers to as friends.

6. Does he have other close friends?

Zephyr Woosley. We also never learn how they met.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?

The second one. Assuming everyone dislikes you on sight does tend to put a damper on things.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?

Familyyy.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?

Single. Never been married.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?

Nopers.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?

I don't know who his first crush was, though for Mildmay's sake I hope it wasn't his Keeper. Most recently, idk. Mildmay doesn't really 'crush' on people.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?

Mildmay clearly likes cleverness.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?

Nooooo.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?

Lots of people in the lower city, yeah.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?

Like 1.5. And regardless of whether Mildmay ever became attracted to men (doubtful in the extreme), he'd never let himself do anything about it. His Keeper used to 'tease' him ('tease' verging on sexual abuse) and threaten to sell him to boy brothels and stuff when he was younger. So while Mildmay doesn't think of homosexuality as a weakness in other people, he certainly thinks of it as a potential weakness in himself.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?

It isn't very important to him.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?

Mildmay is extremely passive, and very giving, in bed. He is extremely hesitant to take anything for himself, though, probably due to the aforementioned sexual abuse re: his Keeper.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?

Lol nope. Fantasy world, people.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?

Mildmay is clearly a little religious, though he isn't super stuck on it. But he considers Kethe an important deity and clearly believes the dude exists, to a certain extent. He believes in the trials and prays and does the normal minimal expected of a semireligious person in Melusine.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?

Basically 'don't hurt others unnecessarily', and now 'don't kill'. Felix being in danger would be enough to compromise it, but only so much.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?

Tolerant. He might think it's dumb, but he's not about to make fun of people for it.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?

Fuck does he hate Obscurists.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?

Poorish, but he's been on Felix's stipend long enough for it to be alright.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?

Extremely low, not gonna change.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?

Most recently, the servant's quarters of Felix's rooms in the Mirador, soo...

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?

He saves it up, one would imagine.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?

He doesn't really have a job anymore.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?

He loves storytelling, maps and history.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?

He doesn't eat much, and hates eating in front of others.
